The Keystone Fund

What Is It? Why Do I Care?

What Is It?

Passed in 1993 with overwhelming support of the General Assembly, the Keystone Fund allocates a small portion (15%) of the state’s real estate transfer tax to recreation, conservation, and open space. Later that same year, 67% of the voters of Pennsylvania resoundingly endorsed the action taken by the General Assembly and supplemented the Keystone Fund with an additional $50 million in bond revenues.

Since its inception, these monies have been invested in Pennsylvania at the local, county and state levels to improve outdoor recreation opportunities, enhance health, and stimulate local economies.

Why Do I Care?

We love our state parks and forests. A visit to one of them is a visit to the best of the Commonwealth. What did Ken Burns call the National Parks in his 2009 documentary series? "America's Best Idea?"

Our state parks and forests are Pennsylvania's best idea, and it is our responsibility to make sure they remain open and available to all of us.

Which is just what The Keystone Fund is for.

We've put together a comprehensive fact sheet to explain the importance of the Fund and the challenges it faces today.

Speak out. Show you care.
